Football Club Barcelona’s Femeni striker Asisat Oshoala has become the first African woman to win the Pichichi —Spain’s Primera Division Women League highest goalscorer prize. Asisat Oshoala officially received her Pichichi award for finishing the 2021-22 Spain’s Primera Division Women League season as the top scorer with twenty (20) goals. Asisat Oshoala’s Pichichi is not just a monumental win for her personally, but for Africans across the globe.
The five (5) times CAF (Confédération Africaine de Football) Women Footballer of the year adds another personal accolade to her cabinet.
The Nigerian forward shared the Pichichi prize with Barcelona’s teammate and joint top scorer Geyse Ferreira. The award show sponsored by Spain’s sports newspaper Marca took place on December 19th, 2022. Additionally, the 27-year-old still managed to scoop the top scorer prize despite an injury-hit 2021/22 campaign.
Asisat Oshoala played a remarkable role in ensuring Barcelona’s third Laliga win in a row. And seventh overall after becoming victorious in thirty (30) league matches during the campaign. This is the first time a team would do this.
The Super Falcon’s and ex-Rivers Angels forward made history in August when she also becomes the first African to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or féminin—the coveted individual prize for a footballer.
Meanwhile, the Blaugrane, also known as Agba Baller would be hoping to continue winning individual prizes, as well as trophies won by team efforts.
