Burna Boy, Asake, Tems, and Black Sherif represents afrobeats at the 2023 Coachella

Burna Boy, Tems, and Asake are the only Nigerian Afrobeats artists in the Coachella 2023 lineup. Many may wonder what is the Coachella. Coachella or Coachella Festival as it is also called is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California USA, in the Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert. The festival is also called Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

It was co-founded by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen in 1999 and is organized by Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Presents. The event features musical artists from many genres of music and culture including; hip-hop, indie, rock, pop, R&B, and electronic dance, as well as art installations and sculptures. Across the grounds, several stages continuously host live music.

When is Coachella 2023?

The 2023 Coachella Music and Arts Festivals will be taking place in the month of April. The Festival has three different sets and varieties of stages. The main headliners are Justin Bieber, Bad Bunny, and Frank Ocean.

The Coachella Festival is also similar to the Afrobeats Festival or more contemporary term Afrochella, where varieties of afrobeats artists come to perform yearly. It is one of the best moments of the year. Fans and music lovers get to see their favorite artists perform live. Performing at the Coachella stage is a testament to where Afrobeats music is right now.

Burna Boy, Tems, and Asake are all of the Nigerian descent, but they are not the only afrobeats artist representing the genre. Ghana’s Black Sherif is also set to perform on Friday, April 14th, and 21st set. This is also the set Asake will perform. This set will be headlined by US Popstar, Justin Bieber.

Asake whose 2022 was superb for a newcomer, has promised to do more this year. And making it to Coachella’s lineup is already laudable.

Afrobeats Coachella 2023 Lineup

Burna Boy who in 2019 had issues with the font in which the organizers of the Coachella Festival printed his name has not had anything to say this time. Although, his name has also been printed in a similar font, a font he dimmed too small for an African Giant like himself. Burna Boy is set to perform in the Saturday, April 15th and 22nd set. Burna Boy monster summer hit “Last Last” should play loud come April and The Coachella Festival. Bad Bunny will be headlining this set.

Tems is another outstanding artist on the list of afrobeats artists to perform at the 2023 Coachella Music Festival. Having had an amazing 2022, she’s also set to take the Coachella stage come April. Tems is among the artists lined up for Sunday, April 16th and 23rd set. Frank Ocean is set to headline this set.

Akon, a Senegalese-American singer, producer, and businessman have done a few collaborations with Nigeria’s best afrobeats artists. In his words, Wizkid is simply a superstar. He gained popularity through his enjoyable R&B music in the 2010s. In that period, Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam collaborated with some of the most popular hip-hop artists in the US. He went further to say he met Wizkid in Nigeria in 2010, adding that Wizkid’s then-label boss, Banky W alongside Wizkid’s manager brought Wizkid to him. Akon added that he knew Wizkid was going to be very big, but his only concern then was Nigeria may not be big enough for him.

Akon went on to share some important stories about another afrobeats artist, Davido. He shared about how he met young Davido in Atlanta wanting to be a rapper. But he was quick to advise him against that, citing the afrobeats movement as the main reason.

In the interview, Akon praised David’s work ethic, saying he is the hardest worker among the three top afrobeats artists. He says Davido was the underdog back then when every young afrobeats artist wanted to be like Wizkid.

But for Wizkid, Akon believes he is just a born superstar. One of those artists to put out one record all year and they’re fine.

Akon went on to shout out Mr. Eazi whom he considers a businessman just using money as a vehicle to get to the money.

What is Afrobeats ?

Featured image shows radio with Afrobeats emblem on it.

One may wonder what is Afrobeats. To be fair, that is a very good question. In this article, we will show you exactly what Afrobeats is. There has been confusion as to what this genre of music is termed, this confusion brought about questions like “what’s the difference between Afrobeat and Afrobeats”, and “what style of music is Afrobeats”. And “what Afrobeats mean“.

While Afrobeat is a distinctly political, non-commercial style of music while Afrobeats is a 21st-century genre of music originating from West Africa, with Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK playing key roles to see to its emergence and sustainability. In the grand scheme of things, it is Nigeria that has pushed the genre to the summit of global music. The legendary Fela Kuti Anikulakpo was popular for producing quality afrobeat music.

Making sure it is sellable and more importantly profitable. In contemporary music today, Afrobeats has now become the most exportable sound. With the exposure Afrobeats has garnered over the years, sub-genres like Afro-pop, Afro-fusion, Afrobeat—a Nigerian music genre that involves the combination of West African musical styles like; traditional Yoruba music and highlife, and American funk, jazz, and soul impacts, AfroswingAfroswing, also known as Afro bashment, or less commonly Afrobbean or Afro-trap is a genre of music that developed in the UK. But they are all under the umbrella of Afrobeats. In a simpler definition, one can say Afrobeats is a blend of sounds coming out of Nigeria and Ghana.

Currently, Afrobeats music is being produced and distributed in Lagos, Nigeria, and Accra, Ghana. But with foreign investors coming in, the soundscape may change very soon. Native Nigerian genres like Jùjú music—a style of Yoruba popular music derived from traditional Yoruba percussion, highlife, and hiplife, etc, have now taken shape under the bigger picture which is Afrobeats.

10 Best Afrobeats Artists from Nigeria in 2022

With the stride the genre has made and is still in the business of making, we can easily compile a list or mention the few acts we considered the best afrobeats artists in 2022. These artists through an extraordinary display of hard work, they’ve released some of the finest afrobeats albums we’ve ever listened to. Below is the list of the best afrobeats artists in 2022.

Wizkid

Leading the pack and chief flagbearer of Afrobeats is Wizkid. Wizkid, aka Big Wiz, has always been considered the poster boy of afrobeats music. Wizkid came into the international scene with “One Dance,” but his success as an artist stretched beyond that hit song.

In 2011, Wizkid’s debut album Superstar earned him immediate recognition, with several hit singles emerging from that album. His rise to popularity was evident in 2014 when he became the first Nigerian musician to get over a million followers on the social networking platform, Twitter. Wizkid has always been recognized as the face of the afrobeats genre.

This is because of his ability to make quality afrobeats music. He has been around for more than a decade, which is impressive is his propensity to remain relevant and sought out for. In 2022, Wizkid dropped his fifth studio album, More Love, Less Ego. A thirteen-track album of quality and duality, as he did some remarkable international features that stunned listeners. Songs like; Bad To Me’s, 2 Sugar received much airplay and radio presence.

Wizkid’s More Love, Less Ego made it to Rolling Stone magazine’s top 100 albums of 2022. The album has been widely praised for its quality and duality. More Love, Less Ego also peaked at number 2 and spent 5 weeks on the Billboard World Albums chart.

Burna Boy

Grammy-winning Burna Boy is currently the best afrobeats artist in the world. In 2022, he dropped a rather successful album, Love, Damini. Love, Damini succeeded in his Grammy-winning Twice As Tall album. Rolling Stone also named Burna Boy’s “Last Last” as the best Afrobeats song of 2022.

Although Love, Damini has not been nominated for Grammy yet but the album has been seen as peaked at number two (No. 2) on the Billboard World Album chart and spent 25 weeks in the process. 2022 also saw Burna Boy as the No. 1 artiste on multiple streaming platforms including Apple Music, Boomplay, and Spotify. Complex Music also ranked his hit song “Last Last as the fifth-best song of 2022.

Asake

If we were using hit records alone, Asake would easily be first on the list of the best afrobeats albums in 2022. Asake’s 2022 was all hits, no misses. And the proof is in him selling out his UK tour tickets in five (5) minutes. With him starting from O2 Academy Brixton 5,000-capacity.

Asake's 2022 remarkable for an afrobeats debutant
Asake sold-out3 shows on the same day

What’s more impressive is that he announced another one at the 12,500-capacity OVO Arena Wembley in London and it was sold out. And another one at the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena sold out. All in one day, he sold three (3) different concert tickets something only Wizkid has done before. Still, it is crazy for a debutant in the afrobeats music scene. Notable Asake afrobeats achievements include;

  • Most #1 songs in Nigeria (6)
  • Most #1 songs on the streaming chart
  • Most #1 songs on the radio chart
  • Official #1 Album of 2022
  • Official #1 Artiste of 2022

Davido

Davido who has had a relatively quiet year still achieved some outstanding feats in 2022. In 2012, David Adeleke became famous with his debut afrobeats album OBO—Omo Baba Owolo, he went on to bear the alias, OBO. OBO grew from that album and went on to drop a second afrobeats album, The Baddest. Subsequently, Davido won Best International Act at the BET Awards in both 2018 and 2014, becoming the first African afrobeats artist to receive his award in person on the BET stage. To date, 2017 appears to be the year Davido dominated the industry. It was the year of his popular hit songs; “IF,” “FIA” and “FALL“.

In 2022, Davido is the number one artiste on the radio. He is also the official number-one artiste on television (TV). Davido is also the official number-one artiste on airplay, which includes both radio and television. He also scooped the number one prize for Gospel song with “Stand Strong“.

According to TurnTable Magazine, Davido is the 2022 fourth-best artiste from Nigeria, with over 366 million streams across all streaming platforms. First, second, and third are Asake, Burna Boy, and Buju BNXN respectively. He didn’t release any album as his peers have done but his features; Electricity with Pheelz, and Dada remix with Young John, both producers proved pivotal in ensuring he ranks among the very best of afrobeats artists.

It is also noteworthy that Davido along with Trinidad Cardona and Aisha teamed up to produce the official Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup soundtrack. That must’ve done him a lot of good in global presence.

Kizz Daniel

Kizz Daniel whose last album came in 2020, released a couple of hit singles in 2022. His 2021 afrobeats album, “Barnabas” was widely praised for not having a bad song. Ironically, he dropped an album in 2018, titled “No Bad Songz“. But fast forward to 2022, and Kizz Daniel is still in the thick of things. He dropped a massive hit song in “Buga (Lo Lo Lo)” and a less massive hit song in “Cough (Odo)“.

To put things into perspective, “Buga (Lo Lo Lo)” was popping everywhere. From clubs to Nigerian wedding ceremonies, then Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. On social media platforms, the song was viral on Tiktok.

After the hype died down, Kizz quickly added “Cough (Odo)” to the mix, to intensify his already huge single. TurnTable Magazine has now ranked Kizz Daniel as the fifth-best artiste of 2022 from Nigeria. Just below Davido in the same list.

BNXN

Formerly known as Buju, BNXN won the Next Rated award at the Headies in 2022. He took home the Bentley and he also reaffirm his status of being a very promising afrobeats artist at the moment. Previous winners of this coveted award have gone on to do great things for afrobeats music. Wizkid, Davido has won this award in the past, but 2022 was BNXN’s year. In 2022, Buju BNXN was all over the place.

From collaborating with UK-based Nigerian producer and rapper, JAE5 and Dave Santan respectively in Propeller to dropping his 7-song extended play, “Bad Since 97”. Although BNXN is notorious for stealing the show on features, his talent and ability to make beautiful, melodious music stands out among his peers.

TurnTable Magazine ranked him third best afrobeats artiste of 2022 from Nigeria, edging Davido who is in fourth place. His total streams are over 367 million across music streaming platforms.

BNXN who has worked with big names like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Timaya considers himself the best among his peers.

Fireboy DML

The YBNL/EMPIRE act, Fireboy DML was also phenomenal in 2022. It is in the same year he dropped the remix to his monster hit song “Peru” with UK artiste, Ed Sheeran. The song went on to scoop the number one spot on the US Top Thriller chart, giving Fireboy his first-ever Billboard Hot 100 entry.

Peru also made waves in the UK and it was banging in every club in Nigeria. It is in the same year he performed alongside Ed Sheeran at the prestigious Wembley Stadium.

Afrobeats Direction and Future

Without a doubt, ahead of Nollywood films and materials, Afrobeats is arguably Nigeria’s unassailable cultural export since the turn of the millennium.

Sony Music and Universal Music Group opened offices in Lagos, in an attempt to operate here. Coming into the mix is Atlantic Records who have Burna Boy on their roaster. The goal is to sign local artists and ensure the refining of raw talents for global consumption. These label companies have also joined the fight against music piracy in Nigeria and the afrobeats scene as a whole. This fight is for the security of music distribution, legal ownership, and rights.

Burna was clearly heard saying “God punish una” towards his own fans. At the Lagos Loves, Damini-themed concert videos also show Burna Boy kicking a fan. Burna Boy took a moment to curse his fans in an attempt to defend himself from the club Cubana shooting. An event that happened last year reportedly had Burna Boy in the midst of a controversial shooting of an unnamed person.

Fans have taken to Twitter to condemn this act, citing human rights abuse. They have also relatively compared Burna Boy’s Lagos Loves Damini concert to Wizkid’s Vibes On the Beach show. And more people wish Burna can take a leaf from Big Wiz’s book.

Singles like ‘PBUY (Peace Be Unto You)‘, ‘Terminator‘, and ‘Organise‘ all debuted at Nigeria’s Apple Music number one spot. He has received his own share of criticism, with some citing his monotonous sound as a potential barrier to truly becoming a complete artiste.

The Afropop star came into the Nigerian music scene in 2020 with a catchy song titled ‘Lady‘. Overall it was a bop, people danced to vibed, and danced to and it promised more. Over the next couple of years, he built upon that and first delivered ‘Mr Money’ before his game-changing Olamide—YBNL boss collaboration, ‘Omo Ope’. It was the song that laid the foundation for what’s to come in the future.

Asake and Amapiano A Perfect Match

Asake has adopted South Africa’s Amapiano sound and made it his own. He has seen relatively huge success in this genre of music and he is not slowing down. Mr. Money With The Vibe is Asake’s first album but elements of Fuji -a genre of music created and popularized by the Indigenous tribe in Nigeria—show it is an album that has seen a lot of artistic resources go into it.

Bad Boy Etiquette 101 EP – Ajebo Hustlers

It can only be the stuff of dreams, Ajebo Hustlers Bad Boy Etiquette 101 EP (Extended Play) is a good project. ‘Dreams’ happens to be the first song off a seven (7) tracks EP. The duo made up of George Dandeson and Isaiah Precious has been around for a while. And their 2021 album, Kpos Lifestyle, Vol 1 gave them a much-needed foundation to build on. Bad Boy Etiquette 101 has received positive reactions and the criticism has been little or nonexistent at all.

Furthermore, Apple Music’s pre-add link to Bad Boy Etiquette 101 was posted on their Twitter page on Nov 21, 2022. It became available on Spotify on Dec 9, 2022.

However, George Dandeson aka Knowledge is the rapper among the two and his use of street slangs and ebonics are nothing short of excellent. Meanwhile, Isaiah Precious, also known as Piego, discharges the duty of crafting and delivering melodious hooks. His singing ability is remarkable. Ajebo Hustlers originate from Port Harcourt and it is a key recipe in their music.

Over the years, several sub-genre has been carved out of Afrobeats; from Afropop to afro-fusion. Ajebo Hustlers have a unique style.

Bad Boy Etiquette 101 EP Reviews & Ratings

Diving into the reviews and ratings of Ajebo Hustlers’ Bad Boy Etiquette 101, we must note this is the opinion of the writer, one he has every right to have. Therefore, it is important to note that reviews and ratings are not influenced by public opinion even if it is helpful at times. Furthermore, the metric for this rating is over 10 (ten), with 10 being the highest number any of the songs from the EP under review can score.

Dreams

Dreams is Bad Boy Etiquette 101 EP opener. We definitely can hear “making bastard money” echoed by Piego’s high-pitched voice on Niphkey’s minimalist beat. Additionally, Knowlegde’s crafty ways of manipulating words were not lacking in his rap, spitting lines like “drunk in success, until I pass out” and how fake sentiments are pushed with the line, “Them go tell you love and light even for blackout.”

It’s the same unique artistic tendencies of wit, unadulterated Nigerianism, and slangs that echo of their Port Harcourt roots and even kaleidoscopic, vibe tendencies that made their debut project, Kpos Lifestyle Vol. 1 one of the best albums of 2021. 7.2/10.

In Love (feat. Fave)

Fave melodious voice imposes some candor in the hook she sang. The classic sentiment of love is a transformative experience in one’s life and how it can alter one’s mannerisms for both good and better. Piego and Knowledge take turns in their respective verses, confessing how strong their lover’s vice has on them. It’s truthful and intimate. It’s different from the normal ordeals artists have often narrated in their songs. 7.8/10.

Kisses

Kisses have the same topical progression, but it deviates into a jaded alley. Piego opens the song, by wailing about how sour his love has become and how it’s now disenchanting and not as magical as before. Knowledge on the other hand is even more bitter, likening his lover’s sexual antics to being as accessible as “general market.” Apparently, the lover in question is quite promiscuous and the duo has all but given up on her vices. Evidently, the beat is incorporated with some beautiful electric-acoustic guitar instrumentation, that serves as a great sonic backdrop to Piego’s vocals. 8.1/10.

No Love (18 Plus)

No Love follows the same template as the duo’s biggest mainstream moment in Loyalty. Upbeat tempo, visceral bass beats, and warm piano keys. They seem to be creating a similar moment here and with the help of Mayorkun, there is some much-needed diversity and dynamism that raises the potential of the song. Similarly, praises have come Mayorkun’s way for his ability to deliver on a collabo. He tends to bring an invaluable synergy to the fore whenever he is on wax with another artiste. 7.8/10.

No Peace (Violence)

If Bad Boy Etiquette 101 was a vehicle certainly ‘No Peace‘ would be the sprocket-wheel as the song reminds listeners of the duo’s tendencies to be a vibe-machine. It’s not the most coherent song, but the swagger at which they deliver said incoherent lyrics and follow them up with more coherent ones—is where the appeal lies. 8.5/10.

Burn My Cable

Finally, as the curtains of Bad Boy Etiquette 101 draw on Burn My Cable, an afro-drill track with highlife-esque guitar synth pads, they glide smoothly like surfers surfing over wide torrents of water. It’s another stereotypical story of a love interest being more hassle than they should be. But the appeal is once again in the dynamism. 8/10.

“See Y’all In March” Says Davido

Is Davido’s new album on the way? After making two public appearances in the wake of his son, Ifeanyi’s death, Davido has gone back to being mute and absent from the music industry. Via a post shared on social media on Dec. 19, Davido shared his plans of going away for more time and making a March 2023 return. David made his first public appearance in November during his uncle, Ademola Adeleke’s inauguration as the Governor of Osun State, Nigeria.

Fans understand Davido needed time off to deal with his loss and not until the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup closing ceremony performance, the afrobeats act has been relatively quiet and absent. His performance at the world cup finale made sure he has only been seen on two occasions since Ifeanyi’s tragic passing.

New Davido Album Coming ?

There’s an air of positivity in his social media posts. And fans and music lovers are guessing he will be returning with an album. Earlier this year he was in the spirit of releasing a new album, set and ready were his words. But following the death of his son, his album and other shows – notably his A.W.A.Y (Are We Africans Yet) concert in Atlanta Georgia were shifted and rescheduled for 2023.

A new Davido album would serve him as he has been greatly missed in the industry. A fun and jolly figure was shaken to sadness and took a well-needed time off the scene. But 2023 promises to turn the situation around and give us the grand character we all know and love.

Davido’s ‘A Better Time‘ album came and went as it didn’t attain the expected success. This is only due to his own standards. In comparison to his peers, Wizkid, and Burna Boy’s projects respectively broke records and boundaries at home and abroad. This time he would be hoping to deliver a new album capable of achieving domestic and international success. Since afrobeats appears to be Africa’s best export in terms of music, a solid album will be perfect.
