In this article, we’ll be looking at lists of Nigerian celebrity activists who have made meaningful contributions toward good governance.
Activism is no new news in Nigeria; it may have been back when the likes of the legendary Fela Kuti dominated the Nigerian music industry. Or is it Wole Soyinka, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Gani Fawehinmi, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Chinua Achebe, not to mention a handful of other notable activists who showed unprecedented resistance against bad governance?.
Today in Nigeria, political, social, environmental, economic, and even cyber activism has been on the rise among Nigerian celebrity activists, musicians, comedians, actors, and influencers. These Nigerian celebrities have been using their various social media platforms to raise awareness and advocate for good government. Speaking out against corruption, and redressing the political and social injustice issues facing Nigerian citizens.
They’ve pulled resources, time, and effort to support campaigns for change both online and offline. These Nigerian celebrity activists are always eager to join forces with their fans and followers just to amplify their voices. If they’re not highlighting the work of activist groups and organizations working on bringing these issues to light, they’re encouraging their followers to get involved and take action.
Nigerian Celebrities During End Sars Protests & 2023 Elections
One of the movements that have garnered widespread attention is the End Sars movement. In the history of Nigerian politics, there have been numerous instances where peaceful protests turned violent. But none was as shocking and revolutionary as the End Sars protest at Lekki Toll Gate on Thu, Oct 8, 2020. This sparked change and led to the disbandment of the corrupt Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), after Nigerian youths were enraged by the incessant cases of police brutality.
The protest gained momentum as young, and old, men and women trooped out to the streets, demanding change. The peaceful protesters were met with severe police brutality. They never expected live ammunition from military men on armored tanks. Or tear gas, network glitches, premeditated shutting down of the internet, etc, but these Nigerian celebrity activists stood in solidarity with Nigerians, fighting for a better future.
They found new ways to communicate, and help convey the wounded to hospitals. And even made donations to the families of the deceased. Even when the end sars movement came to an end and a peaceful memorial was held on 20 October 2021, it never stopped these celebrities from advocating for good governance.
Fast forward to 2023 and these Nigerian celebrity activists still demonstrated the passion to be part of the entire process. Encouraging and challenging Nigerian youths to get their PVCs (Permanent Voter Cards) ready. So they can vote for competent leaders during the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria. And also providing support such as sleeping at voting centers to ensure credible vote counting. Proving generators to power the BVAs machines, food, kind words, etc to fellow voters.
